Reducing Waste Through Better Material Planning

Material waste is not only a cutting problem. It often starts during planning, before a saw, CNC, or laser ever starts running.

Waste reduction starts before the first cut.
In many small shops and maker workflows, material planning happens quickly. A project gets measured, a few notes are written down, and material is pulled from the rack. That works for simple projects, but as the number of parts grows, it becomes easier to waste usable stock.
MakerKerf is being designed around the idea that better planning can reduce waste before production begins.
A useful planning workflow should help answer questions like:
- Which material should be used for this project?
- Can the parts fit on fewer sheets or boards?
- Are there offcuts that can be used first?
- Is the layout efficient, or is it just convenient?
- Would another planning approach save more material?
For makers and small shops, waste is not just about cost. It also affects storage space, project pricing, production time, and how much usable material gets lost over time.
MakerKerf’s goal is to make material decisions easier to see and compare. Instead of relying only on memory or manual layout sketches, the software is being built to support a more organized planning process.
The long-term vision is to help users compare material usage, reduce unnecessary scrap, and make better decisions with the stock they already have.
MakerKerf is still in development, but waste reduction will remain one of the core goals of the project.
