A practical inventory system should help makers use the material they already have, including remnants and offcuts that are still worth keeping.

Material inventory is one of the hardest things to keep organized in a small shop.

Full sheets are easy to remember. New boards are easy to track. The real challenge is everything that happens after a few projects: partial sheets, short boards, narrow strips, odd-sized remnants, and offcuts that are too useful to throw away but too easy to forget.

MakerKerf is being built with that problem in mind.

A good material planning tool should not only help with new stock. It should also help users make better decisions with the material already sitting in the shop.

That includes:

- Full sheets

- Partial sheets

- Boards and dimensional lumber

- Usable offcuts

- Project-specific material

- Material that should be saved for future work

For makers, CNC users, laser users, and small shops, inventory is not only about counting material. It is about knowing what can actually be used.

MakerKerf’s inventory-aware planning direction is focused on helping users plan around available stock, compare material choices, and avoid buying more material when usable stock is already available.

This feature area is still developing, but it is an important part of the overall goal: smarter planning, better material control, and less waste over time.
